it s been a while since we last heard from flord king, who has popped up on junk yard connections as well as regularly featuring on lyssna. it s the latter label he returns to now, and he s got some focused, stripped down club fare to impart. -el klassiko- is a shuffling, funky minimal house jam with some wriggling melodies and a subby bass throb, while -avocado in blue- does a quirkier turn with some crafty synth flex that really stands out from the crowd. -bob- too is a distinctive cut with some detailed layers of dubby ripples and errant computer debris quivering and shaking over the mellow pads and steady beat. -deep diff- twists out some cheeky bass and an overall emotive mood that ends the record on a poignant tip.

congratulations to brian “javonntte” garrett, who this year celebrates two decades releasing mind-expanding deep house gold. his first 12&#8243, of 2018 sees him pop up on people of earth, a label that has previously delivered eps from such scene stalwarts as rick wade, patrice scott and kai alce. fittingly, garrett is in a nostalgic mood on opener “way back-, where his deep, dreamy and soul-flecked deep house groove is accompanied by a spoken word vocal reminiscing about the mid 1990s. elsewhere, “zodiac” wraps starbust motifs around a chunky, bass-heavy groove, “house joint” is a bumpin’ box jam rich in sturdy drum machine hits and swirling chords, and “boom house” is a slightly tougher workout that boasts beats worthy of derrick carter or dj sneak.

quadrant beat is a warm track that is built around warm chords and fashionable drum sounds. again, urulu makes sure to weave some outgoing dub elements into this b-side opening track. romance track is most likely one of the berlin based producer’s most melodic works to date. beautifully executed piano hits flow together seemingly easy over a sturdy rhythm that serves as the track’s backbone. the banshee ep is a work of lush deep house and an excellent addition to both urulu’s repertoire and the saft label catalog.

first track spy vs spy opens things with shuffling drum loops and eerie synth details that hypnotises over seven minutes. atomsmasha has wooden hits and rough shakers peppering a soft, imperfect groove as awkward chords bring an unhinged edge to the mix. on the flip, summer breeze & brotherhood has loose keys doing an off kilter dance over stl’s trademark low-key drums where freebird zones you out with long held chords and detuned keys as cloudy, dusty kicks bring a barely-there groove deep down low. you know what to get from stl by now, but at the same time you can never get enough.
